Eggs stick. Really.
This isn't a minor inconvenience you can engineer around with the right technique. In camp, where you can't control flame temperature precisely, cooking eggs in stainless is genuinely harder than in nonstick. If camp breakfast is a ritual for you — scrambled eggs, fried eggs, pancakes — this is a real cost. It's manageable with enough butter or oil, but it takes more of both.
It's heavier

Cleanup takes more effort
Burned or stuck food requires more water and more scrubbing than nonstick. In the backcountry where water is rationed and scrubbing materials are improvised, this is a real consideration. Making the Practical Switch
What to do with your existing nonstick kit
Check the coating. If it's scratched, discoloured, or visibly degraded — retire it from camp use now. If it's still intact: use it for low-frequency car camping with silicone utensils and gentle cleaning while you transition. Don't pack a scratched nonstick pot into the backcountry.
What to buy next
